For the 2018 edition of the annual summer school Memory in the Digital Age (July 28th – August 5th), Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen hosted two lectures by prof. Rob van der Laarse (University of Amsterdam, project leader ICACCESS) and associate professor Vjeran Pavlacovic (University of Rijeka, project leader FRAMNAT) ,close collaborator of ICAccess. The debate which the two lectures opened centered on competing memories of past authoritarian regimes in Europe. Through the discussions, lecturers and participants fleshed out the entangled reality of memory politics with current political discourses and emphasized the appropriation of past political violence in exclusionary identity politics, (ethno)nationalist and populist narratives.
